This is one of the most pleasant days I’ve seen in New England — low humidity, 70°F. I didn’t have enough cover on last night, so was cold.
Put on an oil filter (Sears); I forgot the Stillson wrench and it took me 1-1/2 hours to remove the old one. Put on the altimeter & grade meter; the compass rests on the padded dash. Was unable to finish the manual spark control.
Went up to Brookwoods with JCH, NJH, & JAH after LCH, having dinner there. It was most pleasant. We got home about 9 PM – I took a turn onto Rt. 40 on the way back.

Discussion with WLZ; he would like to get my NZ paper typed on to the masters next week while he is in California.
Had a lengthy discussion with Harry Sussman (HS), my new officemate re: the Simplex proposal to the Army; he is interested in doing some work on it. I gave him Forrester’s papers also.

The thermostat bypass hose was leaking when I got to the Lab; I’ll get another one tonight at Concord.
JAH & NJH back in school today.
Put a new hose in after dinner.
Removed the front brake shoes from the Jeep; it was real easy with the brake spring pliers that came today from Sears, as did the hose clamp pliers.

JFN discussed two points — 1) why I didn’t take 10 days vacation instead of 8, and 2) did I have an itinerary available for the DC trip on which I had the accident? On 1) I cleared the 10 days with WLZ who said to take it; 2) JFN found a carbon copy of the itinerary in his desk drawer; the Insurance CO. (Liberty Mutual) wants to be sure the trip was on official business. He gave me a copy of the letter to LM.

School started today for DCH.
Rode bus from Maynard to the Lab, leaving the car at the bus stop for AMS to pick up.
My back still hurts from last Saturday’s work.
Car seemed to run a lot better, although it has a leaky discharge manifold gasket somewhere. The engine coolant got cooler on the way home from Maynard! Found a swinging ground in the parking Lights – put it back on by the back-up Light switch.

Cont’d working on NZ report.
Extremely drowsy; it must be the Teldrin capsule.
→ commentHot – Humid
Ordered a brake cylinder hone, brake spring pliers, hose clamp pliers and brake fluid from Sears.
Went with Harry Sussman (HS) over to the Waltham Super Market to see the place. Their prices are somewhat lower and they have a vast selection.
Made arrangements at AMS to replace the Ford head gaskets tomorrow, giving them a set of keys.
Left the Dynakit Amplifier & car radio at Fred’s TV.
DCH worked on his Science Fair Project, making a box; his workmanship is excellent.

Finished cleaning up logs in back yard.
Had reunion of LCH’s family; 27 came, including Helen & Harlan from New York, near Saratoga.
Started to put on the padded dash; need 4 more fasteners.
This seemed the most humid day of the season.
Gave AKM a check for $12.25 as a 20% binder on the air conditioner & sump pump bid. He will forward to the CSSO, Providence, RI.

→ commentTook family to church; HJO was there, had a good sermon on work and the trends of the times.
While reading in the afternoon, the power amplifier quit, blowing a fuse. I’ll take it down to Fred’s on Tuesday.
Took off the LR wheel from the green Jeep; looks like the cylinder leaked. I’ll put on a new oil seal and lining.

Took overload springs off car.
Hauled a lot of wood, and cut most of it up. We must have 2 or 3 cords of wood around.
Borrowed a wheel-puller from AMS and took off the RR wheel from the green Jeep; the drum needs turning & a new lining.
Brought another cable reel over from the trash pile — LCH painted it.

Called Geo Riesz at BTL re: σ & range; the number in my notes for σ was too big by a factor of 2 and the one for range up 10% for more judicious use of available power.

The cat & puppy (Peanuts) occupied the same box last night and were quiet!
Made arrangements at AMS to fix the car on next Wednesday; also found I could borrow a wheel-puller for the Jeep rear wheels. I’ll try my hand at relining the brakes.
JCH at Paula’s for the night.
DCH to a movie in Maynard with Jimmy & Mrs. H.

Was deluged by a stack of classified and unclassified material — a pile about 6″ high.
Decided on most of the figures for use in the NZ paper.
An inventory of classified mt’l taken during my absence showed an Aeronutronics document missing; this was found after some search, as I had seen it earlier in the day.
Turned back to Gail L. the ff documents:
1) 4237-49
2) Study of Army to Determine the Requirements for Fallout Prediction
3) LL Tech Report 238 cy. 337
4) 4237-24 FM 101-31
5) 4237-26 charge to FM 101-31
→ commentRain at night
I hope the rain doesn’t wash my grass seeds away.
Delivered some mail to Harry Sussman at 5 Orchard Drive. Then picked up a load of logs near The Actonian, using the rope hoist; it takes all the labor out of this job.
Overhauled the distributor for the 6 cyl Jeep; sprayed it, the generator, starter and ignition coil; the gen & starter I had previously overhauled.
JAH obtained a Beagle puppy from a neighbor for $15; she is quite happy.
